Job-Share in Parliament – Lucy and Bronwen’s story

You may have seen recently in the news, Lucy Bradlow and Bronwen Bock, two working mums, who want to use a job-share arrangement to be elected to the Australian Senate. They are lifelong friends and are adamant that they bring different skills but the same goal of representing their constituents to the table. They want to be the first politicians elected in a job-share arrangement sharing a single seat and single vote.
“Why shouldn’t parliament be like any other workplace, where there are options for flexible work and job sharing?” Bock said.
And why shouldn’t they be able to do this? They are challenging the norm and hopefully their fight will have an advantageous conclusion for people (particularly working parents) that want to progress their careers using job-share while still having time for their families.

They have been asked how it would work and have said that their arrangement would be that they would work one week on and one week off with a handover at the end of each week. The two women would share one email address along with one vote in parliament and there would be one person working at all times. Who you would be working with as a constituent would depend on whose week on it is. Their wages and entitlements would be split and so forth.

There is no reason why this could not work, so long as there was strong communication and a strong handover each week. As they know each other (and have been lifelong friends), there is no doubt that they get along, communicate well  and most importantly, care deeply about each other and their combined goals.

Did you know you can use TooCan to jointly apply for a role? You may have seen a full-time role on LinkedIn that you would love but can’t manage in a full-time capacity. Why not share the role on TooCan with a note that you have seen it advertised and are looking for someone with similar skills to apply with you? Then you can apply jointly for the job. It can be done, let’s hope it works out for Lucy and Bronwen.
